On Saturday, June 18th Troop 104 went on a 10-mile hike to the Bridge to Nowhere. Originally, we had six Scouts that were going on the hike. We had some last-minute cancellations with two Scouts returning from NYLT, one had a flight delay from his DC school trip, and one was not feeling well. Mr. Martinez and Mr. Rodriguez still decided to have the hike with only two Scouts.
We met at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 5:45am and started on our drive at 6:00am. We arrived at the Bridge to Nowhere trailhead parking lot at 7:20am. The parking lot was full, but we got lucky and found the last parking spot or we would have needed to have parked one mile away which would have added two additional miles to our hike.
At the trailhead, we met a large group of people that were also going to the Bridge to Nowhere, but this group was going to bungee jump at the bridge. We began our hike and went down the trail. When we reached the Sheep Wilderness, we came across a group from Troop 222 and we talked to them a bit, they were a large group with younger Scouts.
The trail crossed the East Fork of the San Gabriel River eight times which helped cool us down since it was a warm day, but it resulted in our boots getting wet. Our Troop knew this going in and decided not to change shoes at each crossing.
We reached the Bridge to Nowhere and relaxed by watching the bungee jumping. We could not believe that these people were paying $120 to hike-in and then jump off a bridge. We had some snacks and tried to dry our feet a bit before starting our return.
On our way back we came across several people that asked for directions on how to get to the bridge because they had gone the wrong way. One of the couples we met had gone up a trail that almost had them climbed the mountain but luckily, they were able to reverse and climb down. The Scouts gave them directions and told everyone how to follow the trail. Once we reached the car, we were all very tired but happy that we got to do this hike.
We celebrated by eating the best hamburgers at In-N-Out.
